The Rolling Stones Should Sing Get ON My Cloud

Amy and Randy discuss that even though PCI DSS requirement 10 is a compelling reason to purchase a log management solution, sometimes it's not enough to get management to sign off on a purchase order. Log files contain a wealth of information about the who, what, when, and where of network activity, and using a log management solution makes it easier to identify threats as well as the responsible culprit. Randy goes on to say that tamper-proof log files and affordability are just a couple of reasons why log management is the killer app for cloud computing. Amy then suggests that the Rolling Stones should change the lyrics of their hit song from "Get Off My Cloud" to "Get ON My Cloud."

The Advantages of Managed IDS

Amy and Randy continue their discussion from the episode "What's an Insider Threat?" on intrusion detection systems (IDS). Randy points out that a good IDS should not only alert you of an attack and what was affected, but should also provide content on how to remedy an intrusion so you can react immediately and not waste time researching how to deal with the attack. Randy also references this month's SC Magazine in which there is a comparison of managed IDS, and he recommends anyone investigating managed services should look at average tuning time after implementation, the ratio of false positives that are reported and the response time for alerting on an intrusion.
