A proof of concept malware, dubbed PlaceRaider, was developed by researchers working for the U.S. Navy and the University of Indiana. Running on Android mobile devices, it was designed to call attention to the ways that rapidly evolving mobile platforms might enable new forms of virtual theft. If a user’s credit card, bank information, or personal information happen to be out in the open—everything is exposed. End users will also be able to get the full layout of a victim’s office or room. http://alrt.co/PPc0wE
Takeaway: Tracking user activities has changed from just IP addresses to physical locations. Such malware, along with access to organization’s internal systems, could take an entire small business hostage. With BYOD, you may not control the devices coming into your organization, but with proper Web and network defenses, at least there is deterrent and detection.
