The week started out gloomy and rainy in Chicago, but it definitely didn’t deter the attendees from bustling to the convention center for Microsoft Ignite. The energy was high and the crowds encompassed an eager spirit to see what new technology is out there and where it’s headed next. With all the announcements made at Microsoft Ignite, it’s easy to understand why.
As I perused the exhibit hall, I got the opportunity to interact with many of the attendees and have some interesting conversations with those who stopped by our booth. Here are a two takeaways from the conference:
- No shortage of technology, it’s the experts that are hard to find. Those who swung by our booth to chat seemed particularly interested in learning about how to offload some of the time consuming tasks associated with security. This wasn’t a surprise since most organizations have tight IT budgets and a business that demands more and more from them each day. Many of the people I talked to have some technology to help with security, but struggle to find the expert resources required to use them on a regular basis. Before falling in love with any product make sure you know how you will use the product and whether or not you have right resources to manage it.
- On-premises? Cloud? Both. A common topic of conversation was the complexity of managing a hybrid environment where applications, infrastructure, and data were in both on-premises and cloud environments. Managing security in different environments may require a significant amount of effort as the technology used on-prem may not work in the cloud, potentially doubling the time and resources required to implement, manage, and maintain security consistently. As security threats continue to increase in complexity, it’s critical to maintain visibility across your entire IT environments rather than in a fragmented approach. Fortunately some security vendors now recognize the importance of complete visibility and are working to deliver solutions that can give organizations what they demand.
In summary, Microsoft Ignite was a great place to gain exposure to the latest technology trends and leave with a fresh perspective on how to move your business forward. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and the wide spectrum of people I met. I will definitely keep an eye out for next year’s event!
