Cloud adoption does not seem to be slowing down. In fact, the opposite is occurring – it is rapidly increasing. According to Gartner, global sales in the public-cloud market are expected to hit $204 billion this year, which is up 16.5% from 2015. Not only that, International Data Corp. reported that companies are planning to spend six times more on public-cloud services over the next three years, than on overall IT. It’s clear that businesses are realizing the benefits of what the cloud offers and are making strides to take advantage of it.
Up until recently, the number one reason companies were hesitant to move to the cloud were for security reasons. Now that securing the cloud is a better understood topic, it’s no longer the top concern according to RightScale’s 2016 State of the Cloud Survey. So, what’s taken the number one spot? The lack of skilled resources to secure the cloud. With the rapid increase of companies adopting the cloud, it makes sense that there’s also a need for more resources with cloud security skills to support them. Unfortunately, cloud adoption has been growing faster than cybersecurity skills on the market.
46% of organizations have a “problematic shortage” of cybersecurity skills in 2016, up from 28% last year, according to Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), and the shortage spans in all areas, such as cloud security specialists, network security specialists and security analysts.
The deficiency is troubling, but there is a way for companies to address their cloud security needs. They can augment their existing in-house IT or security teams with a managed security or security-as-a-service solution to continuously protect their environment. Managed security companies specialize in detecting, assessing, escalating and providing remediation steps to security threats with their dedicated security operations center (SOC) staffed with security experts to monitor and protect your sensitive data. Extending your existing in-house team not only means allowing your company to focus on its core business, but having the industry’s most knowledgeable and experienced security teams securing your environment without expending your organization’s time and resources recruiting and training to build your own security team.
