As reported in Dark Reading and elsewhere, LinkedIn has made a new feature available, LinkedIn Intro, to enable iPhone users to route their email through LinkedIn so that they can get background on an email sender or receiver before they write. The feature helps the user become more familiar with their email partners, LinkedIn says. To enable the feature, LinkedIn plans to route all email messages through LinkedIn servers. Although LinkedIn has announced that they won’t store messages on the server, they will analyze and scrape the emails for relevant data. Also, they will edit email messages to insert the LinkedIn profile, thereby compromising the integrity of the message. http://alrt.co/17sH8AK
Takeaway: While LinkedIn says their email-scanning tool has the most secure implementation possible, adding another partner to email introduces risks. For both corporate and personal email communication, if confidentiality and integrity of emails is important, consider the potential risk before using this new feature.
